A Renaissance masterpiece is on display in Provo.

The background: A replica cast of the greatest doors ever made are featured in an exhibit at the BYU Museum of Art. Those doors replicate the “Gates of Paradise,” a sculpture that took Italian Renaissance artist Lorenzo Ghiberti 27 years to complete.

About the piece: It is one of the greatest masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, an early example of linear perspective and complete narrative applied to sculpture, Natalia Galicza reported. The gates stood facing the Gothic-style duomo in Florence for nearly half a millennium. They withstood wars, plagues, geopolitical divisions, vandalism, air pollution and torrential downpours.

The family of Charlie Kirk prepared the way for a lawsuit against Utah Valley University by notifying the state on Sept. 9 of wrongful death claims, alleging that security failures by UVU led to Kirk’s assassination, Brigham Tomco reported.

The background: No dollar figure was included in the filing. But the potential damages are “substantial,” according to a document obtained by the Deseret News.

About the notice: Under Utah code, a spouse, child or parent of an individual who died because of the negligent actions of a government employee must file a notice of claim within one year of the death and a formal lawsuit within two years, Tomco reported. Prospective plaintiffs in a future case could include Kirk’s heirs, including his wife, Erika Kirk; his two children, who are identified by their initials, G.K. and M.K.; and possibly other family members, like his parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk.

What lawyers are saying: “His murder was entirely preventable and, in fact, would not have happened had the State of Utah and UVU followed through on their stated security promises, which included protecting the rooftops surrounding the quad where Charlie was speaking,” said Brett Parkinson, co-founder of Parkinson Benson Potter, a firm with offices in California, Texas and Utah, specializing in wildfire and personal injury litigation.

Three of Utah’s universities recently received grades by a group dedicated to defending free speech on American campuses.

The background: Utah State University was given the state’s top overall grade — a “D,” Jason Swensen reported. Meanwhile, the University of Utah and Utah Valley University received a “D-” and an “F,” respectively.

About the survey: The average overall survey score on the rankings of 261 American higher education institutions corresponded to a D-.

What the group is saying: “At a tumultuous time for higher education, we are seeing some progress in campus free speech policies and indications that students may be less willing to tolerate shoutdowns and violence on campus compared to recent years,” said Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) President and CEO Greg Lukianoff, in a release presenting the rankings.
